5 Ways to Boost Self Confidence
Positive Internal Dialogue
Having a positive internal dialogue with yourself is crucial for building self confidence. Focus on trying to diminish negative self talk and replace it with internal words and thoughts of encouragement. The age old saying remains true to this day, “You wouldn’t talk to your friends how you talk to yourself”. Positive affirmations is one of the only known ways to break self sabotage. Practice them and practice them often to truly see a difference in how you think about yourself and the life around you.
Practice Self Love
The active art of practicing self love is so so important for boosting self confidence. Self confidence in and of itself comes from a place of self love. If you don’t actively love yourself, the good with the bad, you will never truly be at peace with yourself, thus having the self confidence you wish to present. Try to focus on aspects of your life or yourself that you wish to change. Is it wishing to become a little bit more fit? Try working out. Is it wishing to be more patient? Actively implement changes for these things into your life every day. Soon they will become a habit and after that, they will become a part of who you naturally are. I
f you don’t know where to begin with this, I am an adamant believer in the power of literature. When I felt more lost than ever, I turned to books describing what love is in all types from love you have with yourself to love you have with significant others and cultivated in other relationships. And even if you don’t necessarily like to read as much, give poetry a shot. These books have deep rooted messages that make for short passages that stick with you throughout the day. Some of my favorites are as follows:
Start a Hobby
This may seem like it has nothing to do with building self confidence, however, when you are actively doing something that you are passionate about or that you are interested in, it has fa more positive effect on your life than you think. So many of us are consumed with working a 9-5, merely paying the bills, and binging TV shows in their free time. And while that is beneficial to do from time to time, there is a point where it becomes all too consuming. Having a hobby to do in your free time gives more reason to your life. It can help save us from the daily monotonous routine and give you something to look forward to. It can even be stress relieving and relaxing depending on what it is. Almost like therapy. And maybe if you’re lucky, you might be able to turn it into something bigger. If there’s something you’ve always wanted to do, try it out.
Challenge Yourself
Set daily, weekly, or even monthly challenges for yourself. This not only boosts self discipline, but self confidence in yourself because you are challenging yourself and slowly building up progress that you may not have been able to do just a short while ago. Aim to not be better than other people, but better than the person you were the day before. Doing this allows you to not feel like you are in competition with other people, but competition with yourself. And that is honestly when you will be able to become the best version of yourself. You change and you become better because YOU want to. Not because of what you see other people doing or what other people expect or want from you.
Learn Something New Everyday
I will preach over and over again to learn something new everyday because when you grow your mind, you can grow your mindset. Maybe start off with something that you’re interested in. But I implore you to branch outside of your comfort zone and learn about topics you may never would have thought of to read up on before. Learn about history, politics, new discoveries in science, carbon capture, etc. What I suggest is finding an article that interests you either before you go to bed at night or first thing in the morning. When you wake up in the morning (or really just whenever you have time that day) read the article and annotate in the margins. I suggest doing this as a way to fully understand the concepts being discussed in the article. Maybe you will discover a new interest in this process and will want to find other similar articles. From here you can build on your knowledge and foundation of certain topics. However, while it’s true that intelligence is not directly related to self-confidence, and self-confidence does overpower intelligence in certain areas, it does help to negate ignorance.
